Our Farm
Themeda Triandra 'Kangaroo Grass'
Themeda triandra is found across Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific. In Australia, it is found in all of the states and territories. It grows predominantly in grassland and open woodland communities. It is a significant species in temperate grasslands in Australia, a habitat considered to be endangered or threatened in various parts of the country.
It tolerates sandy or clay soils, is drought-tolerant, and can grow in full sun to partial shade.
We reside on the ACT/NSW border which is exposed to below zero temperature frosty mornings in the winter, and blisteringly dry 40 degree days in the summer heat.
Themeda is a hearty grass that can thrive in almost any condition the Australian climate can throw at it.
The Process - Growing and Harvesting
Themeda has a very short harvesting window as the time between when the seed is fully developed and when the seed falls to the ground is often only two to three weeks of the year. The amount of grass that grows, and the quality of the seed can very greatly from season to season depending on a number of variables including yearly rainfall, current humidity, wind and the quality of grass the previous season.
Shortly after harvest, we allow our cattle to spend a couple of weeks in our Themeda paddocks which helps to drop the seed on the ground more efficiently and allows the paddocks to be fertilised naturally. The more fertilised the soil is and the thicker the seed falls on the ground, the better the followings seasons crop will be.
